︎BRUNNHILDE

Short animation depicting the final scene of Wagner’s renown oprea, Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876).

Brunnhilde is the Daughter of Wotan, king of the gods. At the Finale of Wagner’s Saga, she destroys the corrupt ring of power; having been both victim and culprit in a drama spanning generations. Beside the river Rhine, birthplace of the ring, she rides into her husband’s funeral pyre. She and the ring are destroyed, and the fire spreads across the palace of the gods, consuming their eternal youth.

Brünhilde sacrifices power, wealth and immortality, for death and tragedy – the prerequisites of Love and Beauty. All that, which the ring lacks, and the gods had forgotten.
This piece aspires to illustrate the amor fati, or the attraction to fleeting things, which Brunnhilde emobdies.
Each frame was drawn digitally, before being projected onto baking paper, and rotoscoped with oil paints. These paintings were photographed, then registered and touched-up in Photoshop, before being finally brought together in After Effects.

Music is an edited take of Wagner’s original score for this scene – Brünhilde’s Immolation / Götterdämmerung.

    Produced over 10 weeks.
